World Cup in Japan

Our trip to Japan was truly memorable.

We remained unbeaten throughout a punishing schedule of matches, conceding only a single goal. Although that wasn’t quite enough to take us through to the final stages, we were able to hold our heads high and take pride in our performances.

On a personal note, I played in all five group games and managed to maintain a good level of performance and fitness. This felt like a personal triumph, given the ongoing issues I’ve had with plantar fasciitis in both feet, which have prevented me from doing any significant running or match practice. Swimming became my go-to training method in the build-up to the World Cup, and it helped to preserve the strength in my legs — something that served me well throughout the tournament.

I’m also convinced that adding creatine and beta-alanine to my supplement routine made a real difference, helping me sustain energy and recovery across five sixty-minute games in just three days — a demanding schedule by any standard, let alone for a group of seventy-year-olds!

Since returning home, I’ve tested positive for Covid, which, combined with a 29-hour journey back, has left me feeling tired and a bit flattened. Still, I’m confident I’ll bounce back soon. There are more England fixtures ahead, including a trip to Wales — the team who lifted the cup in Japan — which will give us a clear measure of where we stand as a squad.
